Heritage & Flair, operated by Teakisi, is an African diaspora led initiative dedicated to preserving and celebrating the time-honoured customs and traditions that have shaped the African continent for generations. Operating primarily in the digital sphere, our presence serves as a centralised hub for those who share our passion for African heritage. We aim to empower the African communities here in the United Kingdom and around the world, connect local people to the diverse cultures of Africa, and act as a catalyst for social change.
Through a rich combination of multimedia content, educational resources, and community engagement, Heritage & Flair seeks to foster a deeper understanding of African heritage and its significance in today’s global society. We believe that by promoting cultural exchange and unity, we can not only preserve the invaluable traditions of Africa but also inspire a new generation to carry forward the torch, reinforcing the bonds that connect us all as members of the African diaspora. Together, we can build a brighter future that honours the legacy of our ancestors while forging a path towards greater unity and social progress.
The Calabash or the African Gourd became a symbol of womanhood is still used widely today and is an indispensable part of the African cultural heritage.
African fabric or Kitenge or Chitenge depending from which African country you hail from, was originally imported from Holland. Still, up until the 1960s, most of the African wax print fabric sold in most parts of Africa was made in Europe.
A highly skilled tribe, they herd cattle and live in one of the world’s harshest environments. Distinctive for the ochre they put on their skin and traditional leather clothing, the Himba people are the most recognised from Namibia, but their numbers make up just one or two per cent of the population.
African bead adornments fulfil an important cultural function in African societies. These African bead bracelets reflect the wearers’ beauty, culture, power, pride and identity. Once African beads were valued as currency, today Africans continue to use and wear beads to convey social position and identity, also for cultural recognition and status.
The ritual of the tea ceremony can be seen all over North Africa and has been adopted throughout the region. Making ‘Maghrebi’ tea is a ritual and has become an almost sacred ceremony as well as a national drink for many.
The beauty of handwoven African baskets, table mats and other ornamants extends far beyond their visual appeal. They embody the spirit of a continent, encapsulating the resilience, creativity, and rich cultural heritage of its people.
