South Africa made waves in the pool with Tatjana Smith claiming Africa’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the 100m breaststroke. South Africa also scooped the first medal for the continent in the rugby sevens, when they took the men’s bronze.
The first Algerian and African gymnast to ever win an Olympic medal was Kaylia Nemour of Algeria became Olympic champion on the uneven bars.
Botswana made Olympic history with Letsile Tebogo who brought home the gold medal in the men’s 200m, becoming the first African to win the race the United States traditionally dominated. Tebogo dedicated his country’s first-ever Olympic gold to his mother Elizabeth Seratiwa, who passed away last May.
